Job Description
I represent one the premiere turnkey design and build contractors in the UK. Since inception, the business continues to grow and has a projected turnover of £100m. Currently specialising in the delivery of Data Centres, it will further expand into the delivery of other key specialist assets, including Pharmaceutical and Defence. We are looking for a highly experienced Design Manager to manage elements of the largest data centre builds in the UK.
The Design Manager role is to lead design delivery from bid stage through to completion. This requires assessing, developing and implementing a strategy and plan that will successfully deliver a solution that is:
* Contract obligations
* Programme
* Procurement
* Design detail
* Construction
* Cost/income
* Quality
* Health, Safety & Environment
* Business processes and general administration.
* The MS team environment
The Design Manager is responsible to Projects leads (project manager / bid manager and the Design management department lead for ensuring that the Design delivery strategy and plan will achieve:
* The design meets (and does not unnecessarily exceed) the clients specification/Employers Requirements.
* The design meets or betters the cost constraints.
* The design is buildable.
* The design is safe to build and operate
* The design is available to allow the timely procurement of robust tenders.
* The design is available to meet the requirements of the construction programme.
The Design Manager is the key day to day interface with the Design Team and the company's team will have a key role with sub-contractors’ designers. To carry out and discharge the role requires a range of technical skills and competences, management ability and commercial awareness.
The Design Manager’s duties and responsibilities include:
· Awareness of the Contract Obligations
· Read and understand the Contract and the company's obligations in relation to design delivery and ensure they are discharged.
· Fully understand the Contract Change Process and follow it.
· Follow contract controls/procedures to meet company obligations and manage risks.
· Read, understand and have a detailed knowledge of the ERs & CPs (or contractual equivalent).
· Ensure that designers understand the company obligations in respect to ER/CP compliance and control the designers such that do not have their own higher aspirations and that they remain within the company obligations.
· Ensuring the CPs design and associated designs meet the ERs and is not over-elaborated at company expense.
Design Detail
* Ensure designers are fully cognisant with the the company's bid and the limitations of the cost plan and the nature of design, materials etc that our cost plans can support. This to be addressed in a timely manner to avoid abortive design.
* Ensure the production and approval of key design stage documents as appropriate to the project. As per the Current RIBA and BSRIA plan of works.
The Design Manager’s Minimum Qualifications:
· Have a relevant industry qualification (RIBA, ICE, CIOB)
· Valid CSCS Card
· Management of the design process during the pre-construction and as required, the construction phase
· Support the SDM and SPM in the interrogation of enquiry documents, in the form of an Employer's Requirements
· CITB SMSTS
Minimum Experience:
· Design and Engineering construction knowledge
· Technical and Building Construction knowledge
· Knowledge of current Building Regulations
· Knowledge of Health & Safety / CDM Regulations
· Experience of coordinating, managing, and providing technical guidance
· Demonstrate a strong understanding of the planning process and ideally previous success working with varying London authorities
