Tips for a ICT Technician Interview

An ICT Technician needs to have a wide knowledge of operating systems including networking, hardware and software. In this role you must be able to turn technical information into a language that non IT literate people will understand so that you can explain problems and solutions clearly.

To start a career as an ICT Technician usually people start in a Trainee role with a company and learn on the job but you could help your career by doing a specific IT qualification such as:

  • ICT Systems Support – PC Maintenance Level 1

  • Certificate or Diploma in ICT Systems Support Level 2

  • Certificate in ICT Systems and Principles Level 2

  • Diploma in ICT Professional Competence Level 2


These courses can be done either full time depending on your circumstances or part time if for example you were doing it alongside a job.

The Chartered Institute for IT also offers a range of professional qualifications for those working in the IT sector which is a good way to keep up to date with the world of IT and its changes which happen very quickly. It is important to keep your skills as up to date as possible so it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on what’s new, what courses you could do to update your skills etc.

The role of an ICT Technician usually involves some of the tasks listed below:

  • Talking to the end user/client/employee etc about the problem and detailing this problem.

  • Fixing equipment including computers, printers, scanners etc.

  • Setting up new equipment as necessary and ensure that it is working correctly.

  • Explaining how something works and helping the user to use the equipment correctly.


Usually in this role you would work on site for a company and do most of your support work on the telephone or with visits to different sites depending on circumstances, location, agreement with the company etc.
