NVQ Assessor Interview

The role of an NVQ Assessor is about working with people from all differing backgrounds and helping them to train for a qualification to help them into the world of work. Your role would involve making sure that trainees meet all the occupational standard they need to achieve their qualification.

NVQ Assessor Interview

To be a NVQ Assessor you will need to be qualified to Level 3 as an Assessor and also have some experience in the sector or area that you are looking to assess. Qualifications include:

  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment – for assessing occupational competence in the workplace

  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement – for assessing vocational skills and knowledge outside the workplace, for example in classrooms or workshops

  • Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement – for assessing both occupational competence in the workplace, and skills, knowledge and understanding outside the workplace.


For this role you will also need a great deal of patience to help people develop, this can sometimes take a lot of time and support. As well as the support side you will need to have good communication skills verbally and written as you will need to write reports and keep detailed records about the training and learning, this is part of the assessment.

On a day to day basis an NVQ Assessor could be involved in:

  • Examining candidate’s portfolio’s of evidence.

  • Questioning candidates and providing feedback.

  • Signing off sections, awards when the evidence has been met.

  • Observing and assessing.

  • Attending meetings and working closely with other training staff.


Normally you work on a one to one basis with candidates but this could be in an organisation, in a college setting etc. You will need to be methodical in your approach to work and learning and understand the differences in learning skills from all different walks of life.
