Web Designer Interview Tips and Useful Advice

A typical Web Designer is a creative person by nature and someone who is interested in computers.

There isn’t a specific Web Design qualification however most people in this role will have some form of design qualification or training in web design.

In this type of role you would typically work on a website and use your creative and technical skills to build or re design the website.

As part of a web designer role you would do:

  • Work with a client to decide what design plan, text, colours, background and layout they prefer

  • Test and improve the design and site

  • Add multimedia features like sound and video


Usually a Web Designer will work closely with a Web Developer in building and planning the website and in conjunction with depending on the size and structure of the company you may be required to maintain the client’s website once it is up and running.

To do this role you would need a good working knowledge of HTML and being able to write web pages in different coding.

web_designerAs with a lot of IT experienced candidates a lot of their learning is self taught and this is the same for a Web Designer. Mostly it starts with a passion to do something and then the more you practice and learn along the way the more experience you gain. You can however do courses related that would help you along the way including learning:

  • Dreamweaver

  • Photoshop

  • Flash and Fireworks

  • CSS

  • Javascript

  • .Net


Usually when you apply for roles of this kind and/or attend an interview you need to show your potential employer evidence of your work, other websites you have created etc.

You usually find the role of a Web Designer as a fast paced role, ever changing and ever learning but if you are creative and happy to keep updating your skills then this could be the role for you.

Most of the questions will be technical and portfolio related however you should expect basic interview questions as well:

  • Tell me about yourself.

  • What are your strengths?

  • What are your weaknesses?

  • What motivates you?

  • Why do you want this job?

  • Where would you like to be in your career five years from now?

  • What’s your ideal company?

  • What attracted you to this company?

  • Why should we hire you? What makes you a better candidate than others?

  • When were you most satisfied in your job?

  • What can you do for us that other candidates can’t?

  • What were the responsibilities of your last position?

  • Why are you leaving your present job?

  • What do you know about this industry?

  • What do you know about our company?

  • Do you have any questions for me?
