As a Project Manager you can be employed in almost any industry on many different project types. Part of a Project Managers role includes the following:
- Defining, managing and taking charge of projects until the project is finished
- Plan and implement schedules according to budget and timelines and ensuring you meet deadlines to avoid penalties in some cases
- Budget
- Planning and developing the team
- Quality Assurance on site
- Managing and mitigating risk factors
These are just some of the tasks a Project Manager will undertake throughout the life cycle of a project.
You will need to confident in leading a team to become a Project Manager so you will need excellent management skills as well as being able to lead a team and delegate tasks efficiently. Running a project can be a stressful job so you need to be able to handle pressure well.
You must have good time management skills, be a confident communicator, have great attention to detail and above all be very organised.
It isn't necessary to have a degree in Project Management but you could look at Project Management qualifications such as PRINCE2 or get the Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification. Other project management methods such as PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) which breaks down the project into stages and monitor its progress.
Largely a Project Manager is site based but you must allow times for travel to meet contractors, suppliers or even the client and allow for extra hours needed to ensure that the project comes in on time and in budget.
