To become a Payroll Administrator you must be good with numbers. Any previous experience you have of using spreadsheets, working with numbers and office work will all help to ensure you learn the role of a Payroll Administrator.

The role of a Payroll Administrator is to ensure that people are paid on time. This role is usually conducted in an office time environment where you will be involved in ensuring that the staff are paid correctly each month for example.

To do this job you will need good office experience and IT skills. If you have any previous experience of book keeping or any accounts experience previously this will also help.  As a person you will need to be organised and pay great attention to detail.

Typical duties for a Payroll Administrator role would be:

  • Calculating employees pay including any holidays, sickness, bonuses etc.

  • Checking hours of work.

  • Deducting tax and national insurance as applicable.

  • Issuing P45’s and P60’s as necessary.

  • Working closely with other departments such as HR and department heads.


It is a very important role and one where you need to be accurate and be on the ball every day.

As well as the above sample duties because of the nature of the job you will probably have some administrative work to do including photocopying, filing etc so for this you need to be very organised and methodical.

Although there are no formal qualifications needed for this role you could look in the future at doing some Accounting courses, you will however need good GCSE results in Maths and English and be very confident with numbers and not just using a calculator!!!

Being a Payroll Administrator is a good grounding for if you are looking for a future in an Accounts Department.
